The English Puritans fled religious and government persecution first to degenerated Holland, then to the unknown and dangerous America. During their stay here, it was the first time in all European history that a society lived as if it were the "Promised Land." The ship's people before the "Mayflower," who colonized the land - only 4 survived. One of them cannibalized his dead wife and fetus. He was executed so as not to condone those barbaric practices in a civilized land. Indian women kidnapped and boiled them, some whites froze to death, starvation. Hence "Mayflower" people were on a strict regime. Indians killed 30%  of the Puritans, but the Whites were good to them even executed their own if a Puritan killed an Indian instead of protecting them. YouTube below about the "Mayflower" ship.
